Whizzard Big Dig

sheshone 2

This is my first published deck but I have to give credit to @Radiea who shared the first version with me. The original one is here: https://netrunnerdb.com/en/decklist/36062/whizzard-fear-the-masses-medium-dig

I saw @Radeia playing and win with a single Fear the Masses turn which decked the Corp (removing all cards from R&D and killing the corp at the mandatory draw next turn). Since then I haven't been able to reproduce this beautiful slight of hand, but still had a lot of fun and learnt a lot about playing runner compare to when I was using my own made decks.

The deal is simple: against most decks, get Theophilius Bagbiter + Duggar's out asap.

The Hostage are here for TB but they can also help getting Kati Jones or Fall Guy if need be.

Ideally you want 1 Liberated Account or a heavy Kati Jones on the table before getting the engine out so you can click enough times to get a big hand size straight away.

Once the engine is out, use Duggar's as much as you can each other turn and use the economic cards to raise your hand size on the other turns.

You should have all your rig in hand pretty quickly and be ready to use 3 Amped Up to increase your click number this turn. Then depending on the corp's defense use Medium to dig in their R&D, or (better because this is why 9 cards are in this deck) dig in their HQ with Fear the Masses. That should give you access to quite a lot of cards!!!

Now why are the other cards in this deck:

  • I've Had Worse is here in case you didn't get Duggar's during a mulligan. Always helpful as well if it gets trashed by net/meat damages.

  • Trope, Same Old Thing and Déjà Vu: because sometimes you can't find your Theophilius Bagbiter early enough so you've got to draw a lot and trash late game cards (Fear the Masses, Amped Up). Trope basically saves the influence of an expensive Levy AR Lab Access. Déjà Vu and Same Old Thing also allow to get some Fear the Masses or Amped Up back in hand DURING your big run so you can make more runs on HQ (and dig more of the R&D cards).

  • Day Job (rarely used), Sure Gamble, Armitage Codebusting (rarely used), Kati Jones and Liberated Account are obviously here to get all the necessary cash to increase your hand size up to the point your deck fits in your grip, but also because you're going to need money for breaking a few ices during your big run.

  • You might realise the breakers are simple (Corroder, Yog.0, D4v1d) so they go through most small or big ices but you sometimes must use Faust in which case it can cost you way too many cards to pass some ice (e.g. #Komainu). That's why there is 1e3 Feedback Implants in this deck. So you can pay your way out in front of taxing ices without having to ditch your whole hand.

  • Turntable is here because if the corp scored some big agendas and you're only getting some small ones during your big run on R&D or HQ, then you'll want to swap and get the better ones. It can also help invalidate a R.I.P. #Astroscript or #Project Atlas with a counter. Killing the fast advance/rush gameplay.

  • DDoS should be kept for the final blow, ensuring, at least, the outermost pieces of ice on EVERY server cannot be raised. There was a False Echo in the original deck but it was taking too much influence for me to keep it. Against unprepared corps who didn't create an ice wall in front of their HQ (99% of the time), DDoS should leave you with 1 or 2 ices max to pass several times during your big run.

  • Fall Guy prevents to get your Theophilius Bagbiter trashed by a stupid tag you can't remove. If that happens, you lose your hand and most probably the all game.

  • Finally Traffic Jam has been added because the obvious issue with this deck (which takes time to put in place) is fast advance decks. @Radiea was pointing out in the original deck's description. Now once the crop has scored 2 different 3/2s it's going to be way harder for them to score another one.

Special note: When I learnt to play this deck I was on my own and didn't know most of the new cards because I copied the deck. So I've learnt a few things the hard way.

  • Against NBN: I rarely use the main engine. Getting Theophilius Bagbiter out is too dangerous against #BreakingNews or #Midseason. But I still rely on Duggar's + Trope just to get what I need (often breakers) asap.

  • It's a repeat but don't hesitate to Duggar's even if you don't have the hand size. Trash the late game cards and Trope will get them back later. I was reluctant at first but the strategy usually pays off.

  • In general, try not to run HQ until you're ready for the Fear the Masses, but don't hesitate to run remotes (even using DDoS for the surprise effect, you can still get it back with Déjà Vu later).

If you try this deck and enjoy it, please don't hesitate to give feedback and advice on how to improve it. I'm pretty green at NR and would benefit from your wisdom :).

Consider using Rumor Mill instead of Traffic Jam. Rumor Mill shuts off Jackson, Caprice, etc.; Crisium is not that big of a deal given you can just run again, though it hurts of course. Also consider Paperclip instead of Corroder, and maybe swap out Day Job for Queen's Gambit in case you need to load up after Bagbiter hits the table (most of the econ in my deck was based around being able to do this). Consider adding a third Hostage; I'm not sure e3 Feedback Implants is worth it, since in experience I usually have more than enough (or sometimes just enough) cards to run with, especially with the decline of glacier decks nowadays. You really want the third Medium.

The deck has gotten worse in the past two months or so on the basis of metagame; it fared much better when NBNFA was dominant due to 3x Medium (and that the deck is designed to actually break some ice, of course). (It was kinda bad against HBFA, and it still kinda is, so...)

Tagstorm is terrible for this deck for the reason you mentioned (although I've found that Closed Accounts with Bagbiter on board hurts much more than getting Bagbiter trashed, but my list is different because I specifically included Fall Guys to deal with BN trashing Bagbiter). I've found slotting in NACH and just not running after a while can get me a win sometimes (pay 4 instead of emptying credit pool), but it's still definitely a disadvantageous matchup.

Judicious usage of Trope and Deja Vu is good, as you learned :)

One thing to keep in mind is that if you REALLY NEED TO STEAL and you have Faust down, you can always go Amped Up, Duggars, and most likely get in a server (using Trope to fetch the Amped Up and other discarded cards back if necessary).

(Maybe Traffic Jam will help me deal with HBFA...that's a thought.)

@Radieathanks for the feedback. Now you just made me want to buy Blood Money ;)

As for the meta tips, indeed I'm sure that would work on jin.net or other tournament. Unfortunately in my very local meta of 7 people, big ice are still around and kicking. I need to be prepared :)
