Pretzal? (Des Moines Store Champ 1st)

tooplard 347

This deck is built around a breaker suite of Quetzal, Yog, Mimic, and Morningstar with Datasucker, D4V1D and E3 support. It wins by making repeated, cheap Medium digs.

Morningstar and Quetzal complement each other nicely. Morningstar has problems with decks that rush agendas out behind cheap barriers, and with high strength barriers (not that anyone plays barriers these days). Quetzal takes care of the chump ice until Morningstar comes online, and later handles Curtain Wall with E3.

Faust is in there as a backup breaker for getting through early scoring remotes, as an emergency breaker, and for pitching stuff during a Retrieval Run.

Desperado gets you a credit on every R&D run. Since most ice is 1 credit or free, this forces 2-3 ice on R&D to tax you at all.

Retrieval Run works well with Desperado, Street Peddler, Inject, and Faust. It's good for fetching Yog or Morningstar, or whatever you happen to need.

Deja Vu, in addition to the obvious uses, is a good emergency card for when you really need another I've Had Worse or Plascrete, or you're walled out of Archives or you Peddler'd both Retrieval Runs.

Progenitor is actually really good. In games that run long, this deck's turns often become "click 3 credits, run". When you can only make one run a turn, you can't afford to hit a CVS and spend the next turn single-accessing. It also protects your datasucker from Ichi/CVS or NEXT Gold/CVS, though E3 handles the first and parasite spam mitigates the second.

Scrubber is pretty necessary against NEH and Foodcoats. It's also great for digging R&D.

The rest of the deck is money.

This deck still has some tweaks to be made. In particular, I'm not sure I want to run 23 draw/money cards. Kati is also not really worth it, as this deck is already barely fast enough. I would add some combination of a second Faust, a second Datasucker, a third Medium, or a Legwork. For MWL compliance I'm cutting a Career Fair.

Short tournament writeup:

Round 1 vs Adam, SYNC

He scores Astro, Astro fairly early, while I'm scared off R&D by a Data Raven. I get two mediums on progenitors and start digging R&D through double Data Raven, and steal all 4 agendas left in his deck. He looked afterwards, and all 3 QPMs were on the bottom of R&D. 1-0

Round 2 vs Josh, IG

He's running 0 ice 3 shock 3 shikyu. I draw up to 6 and check his mushin'd card, hit Psychic Field, and lose the psi game. I keep poking R&D and HQ, hitting nothing but shikyu, until I end turn with 3 cards once and get popped by Ronin (didn't check that mushin, WHOOPS) and Neural EMP. 1-1

Round 3 vs my dirty degenerate brother, Gagarin

I've played against his deck too many times, and it's a really bad matchup for him. 2-1 (on the other hand, he was the only person to take a game off Foodcoats)

Round 4 vs Jake, Spark

He gets what looks like a slow start, and I get lots of money and draw. His Spark tax barely slows me down, and I get Scrubber Desperado and Medium out and start digging. I don't remember much else about this one, but I hit enough agendas to win before he can score out. 3-1

Elim Round 1 vs Chris, RP

I facecheck R&D turn 1, steal TFP, run again through Assassin, steal Global Food. He then draws four more agendas, and has to Gifts them to me to have enough money to rez ice. He scores a Nisei before I find my breakers, but it's only a matter of time before I get the points I need. 4-1

Grand finals vs Isaiah, NEH Fastro

Isaiah scores Astro turn 2, clicks for credits until he can rez ice on R&D, topdecks and scores astro, topdecks and scores astro, fast tracks and scores breaking news. Game is over in about 7 turns. 4-2
