Perfection without Influence

slakker 205

Now that clot gave me an excuse to get off the Astrotrain, I wanted to build an RP deck but couldn't decide on where to use the influence. The typical splashes seemed familiar with ELI, Jackson, Daily Business, and Tollbooth but more difficult decisions came with Enhanced Login Protocol, or Architect or even grail. So I decided to learn the basics first and build an RP deck without any influence. That way I could figure out the weaknesses and splash where it was needed. The result has been surprisingly good. I continually get the best compliment I could think of which is "your deck is really annoying." I hope you'll give it a spin and have as much fun as I do. Here's the breakdown:

Standard RP

So at the core, this is just another standard RP deck. Score your Nisei MK II's early, use your counters to protect your Caprice, and only score a Future Perfect for the win. The econ package is also standard with the exception of a few extra PAD Campaigns. They could easily be cut but are nice to have.

No Jackson Howard!

OK, I miss Jackson crazy bad. There is a reason that it's the most popular corp card in the game. If there was one card I would add back in a heartbeat it's Jackson. But where's the fun in that? I will tell you, having only played ANR for about 3 months, I didn't realize what a crutch he really is. You know that panicky feeling you get when you are flooded and just can't draw a Jackson? Well the best way to get good at working through it is to not have him at all.

So the first thing I did was sub out 2 NAPD's for 1 Hades Fragment. First, it decreases your agenda density to 8. 2nd, if you are able to score it, your Jackson problem is solved. But be careful! There is no way to shuffle R&D so if you use it to put a card on the bottom, there is a good chance you won't see it again.

The other thing I did was bump up to 3 Interns. This card is so versatile. Whether it is sneaking ice back into the game, Install/Advance a Nisei that you dumped temporarily, or pulling a sundew back into your scoring server, interns does it all. It's a lot like Caprice in that I wish I could have 4!

For the love of Troll

It is crazy how many people don't know how to play without their ID box. Cerebral Static is gracious enough to help them learn. Granted, it's a dead card with Andy and Velencia, but the impact it has against other IDs is sooo worth it! I originally started with 2 but after watching people blunder, not only do I have 3, but I always try to have 1 in hand ready to go in case they knock one out of play. Maxx has to draw, Noise can't mill, Quetzal didn’t bring a corroder, Leela just looks funny, and Nasir looks…well… almost normal. Anyway, you get the point. It’s just a really undervalued card, especially if it never catches on… ;)

For more troll, add Excalibur. Once again, against Crypsis and Eater, it’s dead weight (hence the swordsman), but otherwise it is brilliant. Ideally you want it on archives. That way anytime they hit a Susanoo, they land on it. There have been many times when I’ve had an Excalibur unrezzed at the top of two of my three centrals. This creates its own scoring window. Especially if it’s on a server they have run repeatedly and you have never rezzed it. They will run it again out of habit almost every time. So when you IAA (install/advance/advance) and they think they have an easy server to bounce off of, it’s pretty funny when you finally rez it. And just because the first one is rezzed, don’t think the other one is dead. It tends to be twice as frustrating when you finally decide to pop it at a strategic time.

Of course, Caprice Nisei is already the single most frustrating card in the game. So adding in the above shenanigans doesn’t seem to lend well to the normal post game chit chat.

Feedback?

So I definitely welcome any feedback, criticism or suggestions, especially if it is within the janky no influence theme. Thanks for reading.

Whilst I'm not sure what you'd drop, Hokusai Grid is a good card in these sort of decks; a continuous kind of poking that can really tax the runner over time.

Something I've been considering was a similar deck with the addition of 3x Hostile Infrastructure and Executive Boot Camp. In your case I guess you would need Tech Startup for the latter, but if you can get 2 or 3 of the Hostile Infrastructure out, they pretty much cannot deal with your assets effectively.

Whilst I'm a big fan of Cerebral Static, I don't think you need three. Likewise Caprice Nisei.

But it's an interesting idea on how to learn to play Jinteki; might try something similar myself

I really like Hokusai Grid, especially with Hostile Infrastructure. Executive Boot Camp may become a must if Valencia continues to grow in popularity.

The only reason for the 3 Cerebral Static and Caprice Nisei is that I really want them out as early as possible. And having an active Caprice on R&D with another in the scoring server that only gets rezzed if needed is a great place to be. Same goes for HQ if flooded or Archives if milled.

I've also thought about adding Port Anson Grid. This might exceed the comboey Jank limit but it would allow for putting non-ETR ice over Excalibur but still drag them through it (or trash a program) if they are just trying to bounce over to the remotes.
